Marx AEROPLANE OR MORE COMMONLY CALLED “AIRMAIL AEROPLANE”: 1936. 13 ½” long, 18” wingspan.
Made around the same time as the Bi-Plane (1936) the “U.S. Mail” Aeroplane saw a much longer production history than almost any other plane Marx made. Marx made several changes to the plane over time by updating the color patterns and by changing the celluloid propellers to metal and possible plastic in the later years of the 1940’s (I cannot confirm the plastic propellers were used but examples of other planes in the 1950’s were made with large clear plastic circles simulating a spinning propeller).
The first version of the “U.S. Mail” Aeroplane has yellow wings that are printed in pale green with “US mail” on one wing and “990-5” on the other. Four red and black motors are mounted on the top wings with bright red and movable celluloid propellers. The green and yellow tail has” TWA” on each tail in this plane. In later years the tail fins and wings were interchanged with different colors, often mismatched.
