Dagwoods Solo Flight AKA: the Dagwood Aeroplane circa 1941
8-1/2” long with a 11-1/2 wingspan, the box dimensions are 6x9x9 (yup it’s a brick of a box).
According to Greenberg’s guide to Marx toys volume one by Maxine A Pinsky the metal airplane with cellular and propeller (actually a clear plastic disc, that simulates a spinning propellor) is predominantly yellow and red with some white and blue. With only his movable head and yellow bowtie showing the Dagwood figure pilots the plane. The head is the same one used on the deck with the driver car in Blondie’s jalopy, but for this toy, Dagwood does not wear a wooden hat. The plane has two large landing wheels in a smaller tail wheel. It moves in an eccentric manner, and even tipped over on its nose.
On the left side of the plane, Daisy the Dog is pictured on the body, Baby Dumpling on the wing. A picture of Cookie appears on the right side of the plane with Blondie on the wing. As with other Blondie toys, the Cookie character dates the toy circa 1941, catalog advertisements also describe the toy has been new in 1941.
Dagwoods solo flight is similar to both of Popeye the pilot toy and the Rookie Pilot but Dagwood’s plane has a larger wingspan and wings are tapered at a sharper angle.
