Marx 4 MOTORED BIPLANE (OR MORE COMMONLY CALLED U.S. MAIL BIPLANE): 1936. 13 ½” long, 18” wingspan.
One of Marx’s most colorful toys is the floor toy the Airmail Biplane. Lithographed in red with yellow, black and green trim it has a center door and an open front window similar to the Marx bombers and flying Fortress planes but unlike those toys the cockpit shows the pilot directly behind the front window. Passengers appear in the seven windows on each side of the plane. “US Mail” is to the rear of the door and the Marx logo is on top of the plane.
Yellow wings are printed in pale green with “US mail” on one wing and “990-5” on the other. Four red and black motors are mounted on the top wings with blue and movable celluloid propellers. The green and yellow tail has” TWA” on each tail in this plane. The airplane sold originally for $.47 in 1936. The plane also comes in blue & silver as well as red & cream, which are the more difficult color combination to find.
