1942 Deluxe Mechanical Tractor Farm Set
“Super Power Climbing Tractor and 9 piece set”
Marx made a number of these sets through out the early 1940s but stopped in 1942 during World War 2. There are sets attributed to both Sears and to Montgomery Wards. This particular set was sold at Sears, noted by the Sears price tag that is still attached to the driver. The tractor is referred to as the “Super Power Climbing Tractor “ in the Greenburg’s Guide to Marx Toys Vol. 2. I believe this set was introduced to compete with the Montgomery Ward set (“Super Power Climbing Tractor and 8 piece set”); the only difference is the sears set came with 8 pieces and the Montgomery Ward set had 9.
The Tractor is 9-1/2” and “has many features, including a brake, a special governor for smooth speed and a motor that cannot be over wound. It climbs over obstacles and steep grades and “hauls loads many tractors won’t even budge” “
“Additional all-metal items in the $1.69 set are “Two trailers, each 7 1/2” long, a 5-1/2 road scraper, 5-1/2 “ Harrow with revolving discs, 9” Derrick with windup that actually lifts loads, 30” loading chain and a shovel. “
The Montgomery Ward set list between 150 and 250. I have seen variations of the “Deluxe Mechanical Tractor Set” sell for as much as 699.99 through online auctions.
