1930’s or 1940’s Prototype “Yellow Cab/Delivery Car” 4” long X 1-¼”
This unique prototype made by Marx, is painted to represent two different vehicles. On one side the vehicle is painted yellow and has “Yellow Cab” painted on the door. It also shows a second door painted for the back seat entrance, as well as black accents for the hood and rear wheel wells. On the opposite side of the vehicle it is painted a dark blue and I believe it is painted to be a delivery vehicle. The script on the white window is not legible (not intended to be legible) but it only has a single door unlike the other side. This side also shows black painted accents on the wheel wells and the hood.
The vehicle winds up and will run in a single direction, the on off switch functions properly. The toy appears to be soldered together as evidenced by the marks on the bottom. Also on the bottom are what is left of the prototypes serial numbers & letters. The lettering is done in white like the majority of the Marx prototypes. This vehicle was purchased from a person who also had a Trick Taxi Bump and Go Prototype that was photographed earlier in 2017.
While this is not marked with the customary “Marx” logo, I believe this is a Marx prototype possible from England. Marx painted a made a number of prototypes like this one where the toy could be lithographed multiple ways. A number of documented vehicles have been located over the last several years. The shape of this vehicle is not one that Marx produced at least in the American market. A similar shaped body was used for the Marx Speedway sets in England. They are similar in shape of the body as well as the base for the toy. Two examples are shown.
