Amos ‘N” Andy Fresh Air Taxi: 1930, 7-3/4” long X 3-1/2” wide X 5” high
The taxicab toy is considered as one of the best Marx toys, has a unique mechanism that produces amusing action. The cab rolls forward for a shirt distance, then violently shakes its occupants, Amos and Andy. The cab resumes rolling forward for a few feet, only to repeat its shivering action. The cab was designed so that the motor housing and rear wheels can pivot. The separate front wheels have a single assembly on the axle which also enables them to pivot, As a result, the entire chassis tilts or sways from left to right.
Amos sits in the front, leaning over the steering wheel to which he is attached. He is dressed in a green shirt with rolled up sleeves, a light-colored vest, and checkered pants. Andy takes his ease in the back seat with crossed legs and a cigar. He is dressed in a blue coat, a hat with a green band, and light colored pants. A white dog with black ears sits in the front seat next to Amos. Amos and Andy are attached to their seats with spring-Action brackets which enable them to shake when the car is moving. The dog is attached loosely to the seat with tabs that allow the same motion.
The cab is brightly colored in orange with black running boards. To appear worn, the tires are lithographed with patches. The following lettering appears in black: “Original and Genuine Authorized Fresh Air Taxicab, Amos “n” Andy, Genuine Facsimile Signatures, Copyright Correll & Gosden” on the back of the car. “Made by Louis Marx & Co.” on the lower left corner of the back; “New York, USA.” On the lower right corner of the back; “License Applied For Time After Time” on the trunk; “Fresh Air Taxicab Co. of America Incorporated” (sic) on the hood: “Rates Ask Amos”, with letter “s” printed backwards, on the back door of the car. The style of lettering is erratic. The title of the Amos and Andy film. “Check” and “Double Check”, is printed on the sides of the car. A meter with lettering that reads “Tariff” is attached to the right side of the windshield.
A rare variation of the car has lettering on the front door that reads “Andy Brown Prez, Amos Jones Driver”.
