Mortimer Snerd Tricky Auto
1939
7 ½ inches long by 6 ½ inches high.
Like Charlie McCarthy, Mortimer’s nerd was a dummy for ventriloquist Edgar Bergen. Mortimer’s nerd car is almost identical to the Charlie McCarthy car. Only the lithography and the drivers head differ. Like the Charlie McCarthy car, the little the lithography of the head is finally detailed. However, Mortimer’s nerd has yellow orange hair, lithographed eyelashes in a big smile. Mortimer wears no hat, although he does in the Mortimer Walker see page 97 of the Greenberg’s guide volume one. He is colorfully dressed in a yellow jacket with red and black checks a yellow spotted shirt and a red tie with yellow and black stripes.
The Mortimer’s nerd toy is outstanding for the fine use of color mauve, blue, blue green red yellow, yellow-orange cream and black purple car has cream trim red wheels and cream rims and blue running boards fenders and floor some cars appear to be faded if possible it is best to avoid buying the toy in this condition the feeding of the toy is more noticeable than other toys because the original colors are so bright.
The Marx logo in 1939 at your Bergen or on the side of the blue green trunk and “Mortimer’s nerd” and “Louis Marx and company New York New York made in USA patent pending” are on the backside of the trunk three labels “Mortimer Snerd USA in Vermont and other illegible labels are on top of the trunk “Vermont on the wooden dummy’s car is a touch of humor since Marx had one worked for a wood products company in Vermont. The car also has wooden hubcaps.
