Dora Dipsy car 1950’s: 5-3/4” long x 6” high
The Dora figure is shown to her waist and is a little girl with two brown pigtails and a blue and white dress with a white collar. She holds a plastic steering wheel. The Dora figure has a spring in her neck which makes her head nod and shake the spring is partially hidden by a piece of plastic that covers the neck but can be seen under the headpiece.
The dominant colors of the tin car are red and yellow. The car has lithography similar to the one of the versions of the old jalopy eccentric car the only difference between these cars is in the space on top of the trunk. In the old jalopy the space is occupied by two other figures. In the Dora car the space is covered with “hot dog” and “25 gals”. Put lettering on the Dipsy car reads “queen of the campus” and “engine room” the initials “J.C.” Which probably stands for Jay Campbell the head artist of the Erie plant appears on the radiator.
The large tin back wheels have lithograph spoked edges with red disks and black and white stripes the front wheels are red and white with white lithographed tire treads.
Dora has a counterpart named Dan. His vehicle is identical to Dora’s. These two plastic head and torsos were also used on a set of 6” vehicles that were designed to wind up and move around on the table but not fall off when they get to the edge. The toys were sold separately as well as a set with a square metal plate that allowed the toys to bump into each other while moving around on the plate.
